In this post, we’ll explore the pros and cons of using an eSIM, share my personal experience with it, and help you decide if it’s the right choice for your travels. Understanding the eSIM benefits and drawbacks can help you make informed decisions for your connectivity needs while abroad.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM, or embedded SIM, is a digital SIM card that allows you to activate a cellular plan without having to use a physical SIM card. This means you can switch carriers or plans without needing to change your physical SIM.

Pros of Using an eSIM: The Benefits of eSIM Technology

  • Flexibility: Easily switch between different carriers or plans as needed.

  • Convenience: No need to carry multiple physical SIM cards or worry about losing them.

  • Multiple Profiles: Store multiple eSIM profiles on one device, making it easy to switch between local and international plans.

My Personal Experience with eSIM Technology: A Reflection on eSIM Benefits and Drawbacks

Having experienced the challenges of international data roaming, I decided to try an eSIM with Airalo during my travels to Vanuatu in 2023.
On our recent travels to Bali 2025, and as a Telstra customer, I was looking at $10 a day for international roaming, which quickly adds up. Instead, I opted for Airalo’s eSIM, purchasing a $39 AUD plan for 10 GB of data. It broke down to about $2 a day, allowing me to stay connected without breaking the bank.

As a content creator, having reliable data coverage was essential. I used my phone for everything—from booking rides to navigating maps while on the back of a bike. The eSIM allowed me to seamlessly access the internet without worrying about exorbitant roaming charges.

This was also very helpful whilst some taxi drivers can be sneaking and miss the roads they need to turn down, to take you a longer way to get more money from the meter. To which we watch on maps for our phones and just give a heads up that we are watching. Another story was when I had put my Nan, Mum and Daughter into a ‘Grab’, I was able to watch their movements and the car had gotten stuck on a one way road, so we were able to jump on the scooter and follow to where they were and stay connected the whole time. If we only had wifi from a restaurant, we would have been stuck there feeling helpless, thankfully we had our coverage we were able to jump on our scooter and go find them.
